Over a year ago, just in the middle of the pandemic, Pierre Bouvier started working with a talented young singer Beckett McDowell, the son of the actor Malcolm McDowell (Clockwork Orange), who happened to be Pierre’s neighbour.
Pierre produced a full album of songs for Beckett, often co-written by both Pierre and Chuck from Simple Plan. The first song of the album – “Weirdo” came out this month and Beckett recently revealed a little bit more about how his collaboration with Pierre came about and mentioned that the song was in fact originally written as a pop-punk Simple Plan song.
“Weirdo came to be because I’m neighbor with my buddy Pierre Bouvier from Simple Plan and my little brother Finn McDowell golfs with him sometimes and he was like: “Hey, you should check out my brother’s new album!” Cause I’ve written and done an album previously that I’ve never released it. Pierre’s like “Okay, cool!” So he listened to it and he was like “Yeah, that sounds awesome.” So he’s like “Hey, I got this song ‘Weirdo’ for you.” It was a Simple Plan song and it was written by him and Chuck, the drummer, and Nick Bailey, their buddy. And I was like “Oh, this is a great song!” It was very pop-punky and I changed it to kind of a pop song. I mean, we did together, obviously. But like he made it, he changed it from major to minor, and I wrote the bridge and like before you knew it, we were in love! No, before we knew it, we had a cool song in our hands and that’s how Weirdo came to be.”
Only yesterday the music video for Beckett’s “Weirdo”, which also features a small cameo by Pierre, was released. Check it out below:
