Chuck on next Simple Plan album: “Our goal is to make the next record faster”

The final No Pads anniversary tour, which took Simple Plan to Brazil in the end, is now over and the first video interviews are just starting to come out! Below, we offer you a couple of the latest ones, which are definitely worth watching.

The first interview was filmed by the promoters Queremos in the backstage of the show in Rio de Janeiro with all four of the currently touring members of SP. The interview is very interestingly made and mostly features footage from the show in Rio with the voices of the members of the band in the background, discussing topics such as their fans in Brazil, the venue Circo Voador in Rio, the No Pads anniversary and the meaning of this album.

Have a look:

In the second interview for Ponto POP the guys once again discussed the importance of their first record but Chuck also mentioned the future plans for the band, which mostly revolve around making a new record. According to Chuck’s answer, it looks like the guys are still sticking to their goal to try to make their sixth release a bit quicker than the previous ones – as you may we aware, Simple Plan usually take about a year and half off to write songs and record an album. If this time were to be cut shorter, we could possibly expect a new album next year.

Check out what Chuck exactly said about album #6 and watch the full interview below:

After [Warped Tour], we’re gonna probably just slow down on touring and just focus on new music. And make a new record. I’m not sure exactly how long it’s gonna take but our goal is to try to make it a little faster than the previous albums and then just go back on tour, man! Just keep playing and, you know.. just have new music out there.

Simple Plan aim to modernize the sound of No Pads on their 6th album

In a new interview for EatThisMusic.com, Jeff Stinco discussed the soon-to-begin Australian tour and while at it, he also talked about the upcoming plans for the band, who is set to start working on their 6th studio album this year, after their tour is over [by the end of summer]. In this interview, Jeff mentioned that the idea is for the band to make the new album’s sound incorporate the best things their debut album offered – but with a modern touch.

Check out the band’s idea in Jeff’s own words below:

[On Simple Plan’s next plans in 2018]

We’re going to start winding down from touring and we’re gonna make a new record. So, we have Brazil, we have the States – we’re doing Warped Tour in the States, the whole Warped Tour, it’s the final edition, so it’s kind of a big deal. We’re stoked to be part of it. And then in the fall we’re gonna start making a new record. And yeah, we’re just excited. You know, as I said earlier, you go back, you revisit you catalogue and it makes you kind of realize what were the great things about what you were doing and what you kind of forgot to keep in your music, you know. There’s a lot of elements on that first record that need…. It needs to be modernized, but with ideas, concepts that we have to bring back to what we’re doing and we definitely will.

[On whether it is difficult for SP to modernize their music]

No. I think, for instance, there’s a song off our last record called ‘Boom’ – it did really well, it was never a single on the radio but oddly enough it kind of had a lot of hits on YouTube and on a bunch of playlists everywhere and it’s doing really really well. And that song has sort of a first-record-vibe with modern sounds and modern ideas. I think we kinda know what we need to do. I mean, we’ll see if we manage to do it right but we kinda know what the idea is to modernize that sound.

Simple Plan consider changing the way they release albums by releasing music in batches

Over the past decade, the music industry has changed dramatically. Instead of buying physical albums, people nowadays mostly consume music online and instead of using their CD players to listen to their favorite band’s new album, they can now connect to it with a simple push of a button on their favorite app. Streaming services, such as Spotify, which offer monthly subscriptions that get one an indefinite catalogue of music for the price of one album, have made such an impact on music consumption that artists must quickly adapt to this new reality if they do not wish to lose momentum and be forgotten.

And this exact issue is one that Chuck Comeau brought up in a recent interview for the Brazilian website Omelete, where he mentioned that Simple Plan are obviously aware of the recent changes in the music industry and are ready to face this challenge by changing their own established routines.

In the interview Chuck revealed that his band is currently toying with the idea of releasing their new music in a bit unconventional way than the fans have been used to so far. Check out what Chuck means by that below:

“With the emergence of Spotify and other ways of listening to music [than radio] people can find what they want to hear without having to go through the decision makers, who decide what you want to hear. You can decide for yourself now.”

“[…] This [No Pads] tour delayed the songwriting process of our next album, because it lasted longer than we expected, but the idea is to finish the tour in July or August. But as things have changed so much, maybe we will not release an entire album. We may release only a collection of songs, and a few months later another one. We might try new ways of releasing songs, but we’ll definitely release something soon after the tour is over, this is the plan.”

– Chuck Comeau –

Chuck’s proposed idea seems to be that Simple Plan might consider not releasing a full-length 12-songs-long album, but rather smaller-sized “compilations” of songs – perhaps EPs. It is certainly an interesting idea worth exploring as this would allow the band to spend less time writing songs and recording them and most importantly, it could bring them back on tour sooner than a full-length album.

It is important to note however that Simple Plan are still in the very early stages of creating their new record and hope to begin writing songs in a course of the next few weeks and then throughout the whole summer at least. Everything can still change until then.

How do you feel about Chuck’s idea of releasing songs in batches? Would you prefer getting less songs in a shorter amount of time or you’d rather wait longer for a full-length record?

Seb hopes for new Simple Plan music by the end of 2018 & discusses David in a new interview

Ahead of the upcoming Australian tour, Sebastien Lefebvre did an interview with the Australian website May The Rock Be With You. In this interview, Seb discusses mostly the concept of the No Pads tour and summed up the past year, but he did also mention quite a number of information regarding the next plans for the band, which mostly include making a new record.

Sebastien’s words match his bandmates’ recent interviews, in which the guys have previously stated that they would like to focus on finishing the 6th Simple Plan album as fast as possible, as they don’t want their fans to wait any longer for the next release. Apart from that however, Seb also hopes to already have some music released this year…

Check out what exactly Seb has said regarding new Simple Plan music below:

“[…] Right now we’ve obviously got a couple more places to go on tour, but we just started a little bit of time off now, we don’t have any major tours until the Australian one so we’re sort of getting a bit of rest, I’ve already started working in my studio and I’m sure the other guys have as well and just trying to come up with some ideas, see what sticks, see what doesn’t and we’ll get to it more officially in the next few weeks or next month or something like that.

[…] As soon as we start writing and things go amazing and every song that we write is great, then we’ll head in the studio quite quickly because we would love to take a little less time between albums. However everybody wants to see this anniversary tour so we have to take a little break from writing to travel to come see you guys and other shows this year here and there which will be fun because there’s always shows to play here and there, but that is the plan, we’re gonna try to focus on writing and recording and the album I think that’s the theme for this year.

[…] By the end of 2018 Simple Plan will release some new music, that’s what I’m hoping for, maybe not a full album, maybe not anything but hopefully by the end of the year something will be out, that’s what I’m crossing my fingers for – but don’t put that on the schedule, don’t put a date on that, don’t go crazy on the fan sites – that’s just what I’m hoping for.”

– Seb Lefebvre –

As you can see, things are definitely not set in stone just yet and there’s still a whole record to be written, recorded and published, but the band is certainly already looking through all its options: Seb has already begun looking for some inspiration and in the coming weeks, the band may in fact start working on new music. At this point we also know that Simple Plan plan on breaking their “no writing on tour” rule and would like to also work on their music throughout summer – while on Warped Tour.

However, there’s still one question left to be answered: what about David? Simple Plan’s bassplayer has not been performing with the band for the whole past year, while he’s been trying to get better at home, as he revealed last year that he’s been struggling with depression for quite a while now. The question of David will of course be crucial when it comes to the planning of any new tours as well as the recording of the next album, so it was only natural that the reporter asked it in this interview with Seb as well. This is what Seb replied:

“He’s been dealing with a tough year so he’s been taking a lot of time to rest and stay at home, he’s going through a very difficult depression so he’s just slowly getting out of it, and he’s still in the band obviously so don’t start any rumours but he and us felt it was better to stay home and rest instead of getting on a hectic touring schedule all year that was extremely busy. At the moment he’s just making sure he feels good.”

– Seb Lefebvre –

There’s currently still no word on whether David wants to rejoin Simple Plan on tour anytime soon, but it doesn’t seem very likely at this point – especially given the nature of the destinations Simple Plan have on their schedule next. Keep checking back – if anything changes, we’ll let you know right away.

In the meantime, we’d like to ask you to please continue allowing David to get back on his feet again on his own time.

Simple Plan aim to break their no-writing-on-tour rule and will start working on new album on Warped Tour

Slowly but surely, Simple Plan are heading to the finish line of this tour cycle. They still have some touring to do with the No Pads anniversary tour in Australia and South America in April and May and after that they will spend the summer on Warped Tour – but and after that the plan is to focus solely on their next studio album, which will be their sixth record. However, based on Chuck’s own words from the recent interview for MusicFeeds, it seems that for the first time in forever, Simple Plan may be in fact considering to start writing songs while they are on tour, in order to speed up the process of releasing the new album.

Usually, Simple Plan’s busy schedule didn’t really allow them to have any time left to work on new music while on tour, which is why they usually took about a year and half off after each album to write songs and then record them in a studio. But with the music industry and today’s society being so very fast and changing every minute, the band now feels that it’s important for them to not wait as long to release new music, in order to not lose their momentum.

Chuck, in fact, hopes to start working on Simple Plan’s sixth album this summer on Warped Tour. Check out what he said to MusicFeeds:

“We’ve been discussing [the new album] and talking about when we want it out and what kind of sound that we want. We’re not the greatest at writing while we’re on tour, it’s really hard for us. So I think we’re planning to do that right after Warped Tour around August or September and start writing.”

We might actually try to do a little bit of writing on the Warped Tour this time around and try to get the songs out and try to get inspired by all of the great bands that are going to be there and reconnect with some of our roots on that tour. We want to try to have it out quicker because we always take a long time to make albums and I feel like in 2018, that’s not the way you do it. You just have to shake things up and do things differently and have more music coming out more often.

So I think that’s the game plan, to make sure we have a really great and special album but at the same time, make sure it comes out quicker because our fans are asking for it and we want to be back on the road. We don’t want to go away for three years, that’s what Metallica used to do in the ’90s (laughs). We need to be more like hip hop and put more stuff out.”

– Chuck Comeau –

Fans will also surely be happy to hear that Chuck also discussed the topic of possible collaborations on the next album and mentioned that the band wants to keep the record more in the spirit of their pop-punk upbringing:

“I feel like we’ve always done [collaborations] in the last five or 10 years. We always try to do something that’s a little bit outside what people think that we can do. But all of these shows and tours have been inspiring and have revitalised the band and made us really eager to write again and come up with more songs that have an impact on our fans. So it’s kind of motivating when you have an audience that’s excited and is showing up, you want to give them what they want.

So I think on the next record we want to throw in some of that legacy pop punk influence and have some fun that’s really in your face and catchy and fast Simple Plan-style music but also take a few chances here and there. But yeah, I think you’ll get a lot of back to our roots kinda vibes and old school, so that’s going to be fun.”
