Simple Plan to start working on new album early 2018!

With Simple Plan’s No Pads tour slowly coming to its end and only a with the band having only a few more places to visit it with this year, the question of “what’s next” has been on many journalists’ minds lately. And lucky for us, the guys keep giving quite a promising answer to that question. According to a recent interview with Jeff, the band is ready to start working on a new record just as soon as their schedule clears after this year’s touring – that means the guys might start writing as early as January 2018.

Read what exactly Jeff said about the new album-making process and all the challenges that come with it in last week’s interview for Purdue University [you can listen to the full interview here]:

Interviewer: So, […] what’s in the future for you guys?
Jeff: “Well, you know, we’re gonna stop celebrating… [15 years of 1st album] cause it’s been a full year of celebrating. I think we’ve had enough of that. So, yeah, we’re gonna do like a few more shows around Japan, Mexico… and we’re gonna finish the year, you know, in good places. And then we’re gonna start making a new record! We’re gonna start working on new music. And yeah, I mean every time it’s a bit of a challenge. It’s like.. what is Simple Plan capable of achieving next? And can we stretch the boundaries of what people think and know about Simple Plan? How do you make the Simple Plan sound sound current in 2017, 2018 and 2019? So, those are all challenges that we’re gonna work on, you know, during the next year. But it’s exciting to be getting into a new record. And the goal is just to get out there, finish the record and start touring as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, Sebastien has pretty much confirmed the same in the interview for The Charlatan.

Even though this is obviously very good news, let’s not make assumptions that the band will also release their new album next year. Simple Plan usually tend to take their time writing songs and song-writing is usually the longest part of their album-making process, as they do not like to write on the road while touring. Realistically speaking, recording and post-production included, we could be looking into 2019 as a release year for the next record. However, the band members have previously been quoted many times that they want to hurry up with this record more than ever before, so who knows… they might just surprise us. :)

New custom guitar for Jeff in works for new Simple Plan album recording in 2018

Yesterday, August 5th, Jeff Stinco visited the JK Custom Guitars shop in Montreal to start working on a brand new custom-made Gibson Les Paul style guitar that he would like to use for recording of the next Simple Plan album.

From the note posted on the JK Custom Guitar’s Facebook and Instagram we now know that it seems like the recording process of Simple Plan’s album no. 6 seems to be truly aimed at 2018. Check out the note below and also a picture of Jeff trying out one of the guitars at the store yesterday:

Simple Plan already have “a bulk of songs ready” for 6th album

In a new interview from Hungary, Simple Plan’s guitarist Jeff Stinco discussed the band’s relationship with fans, the reasonings behind David Desrosiers’ absence on tour and also surprisingly hinted on the fact that the band may already have some songs ready to go for their next album.

The Hungarian server Life.hu published an interview with Jeff Stinco today, in which the guitarist revealed a number of interesting information. First of all, this was probably one of the first interviews in which a member of the band opened up about David’s struggles with depression and how the band has dealt with this situation. Jeff even revealed that David insisted that the band continued touring without him. Check out Jeff’s quote below:

“We have a challenge on this particular tour. David, our bass player, is actually not with us. He’s having a really hard time, he’s suffering from depression, which is something that, you know, a few years back, I don’t think we could’ve discussed openly, but I think people are more open to it now. So he’s taking care of himself. And I think that as a band we decided to support him and basically allow him to take that time off and keep touring. And he wanted us to keep going, he wanted us to keep touring.

Towards the end of the interview, the conversation moved to the ever-lasting elephant in the room: when will Simple Plan release a new album? Jeff once again repeated that the band would like to not take as long as they previously have with TOFTT to make a new album but besides that he also dropped a very interesting hint on Simple Plan already having some material to work with! See what Jeff said below:

“You know what, we were planning on celebrating the 15th anniversary around the anniversary of the record, on March 19th, you know 3-4 shows and it’s becoming a full year of touring. But after that, we have to stop. Make a new record. And this time around we’re not gonna wait as long to put out new music. We have a bulk of songs that are already ready but we’re perfectionists and we wanna make sure that you know, like, what we release is actually up to par. And we’re ambitious guys, you know, we wanna… I told you earlier, we wanna keep growing and evolve and that demands time. So we’re gonna spend the time that it takes in the studio to develop those songs. As I said, it’s a work in progress. We’re gonna finish this touring, get into the studio and man, hopefully we’re not gonna take a full year of recording like we did the last time.”

As you know from the SimplePlan.cz interview, the band definitely expects some song-writing to be done but it’s very interesting to hear that Simple Plan already have some songs they can use as a starting ground. Given that Simple Plan never write on the road, it is very possible that the songs Jeff mentioned in the interview are some of the “left-overs” from the song-writing sessions from Taking One For The Team. Chuck and Pierre wrote over 80 songs for TOFTT but only 14 of them made it onto the record. Now, not all of the remaining 66 songs are completely finished, but some of them might be and perhaps these are the songs Jeff is thinking off.

It wouldn’t be the first time for Simple Plan to use old material for a new record. In 2013 Simple Plan released a whole EP “Get Your Heart On: The Second Coming”, which featured songs originally written for Get Your Heart On. Similarly also GYHO itself included a bonus track called ‘Never Should’ve Let You Go‘, which the boys wrote for their third, self-titled album. In most cases however, Simple Plan usually start working on a new album from scratch.

How do you feel about Simple Plan possibly using songs they wrote for their previous record? Would you like to listen to more songs created in the “TOFTT” era? Let us know in the comments!

Simple Plan aiming to possibly release sixth album around 2018

The Czech online magazine called Headliner’s May issue features an interview with Simple Plan’s drummer Chuck Comeau. In the interview, Chuck discussed Simple Plan’s current NPNHJB tour, which celebrates their debut album’s 15th anniversary. And while there are still plans to prolong this anniversary tour, according to Chuck’s most recent words, the band also still wants to continue with their Taking One For The Team tour after the No Pads tour (which he still plans for the end of this year):

“We didn’t manage to tour a lot with the fifth record yet, even though we’ve been touring pretty much non-stop except for a couple months at the end of last year. Now we decided to include the anniversary tour and after that we still want to head out on another Taking One For The Team tour. We think we owe it to that record.”

– Chuck Comeau –

Of course after the tour cycle ends (whenever that is), the band is certain about one thing: they don’t want their fans to wait another 4 years for a new record. See what Chuck had to say about a possible 6th album’s release date:

“After we finish the cycle for our current record, which will be around the end of this year, the time will come for the creative process to begin. We would like to start working on new material in the beginning of the next year release the album as soon as possible. One thing is clear: we don’t want to take too much time in between records, so we would like the next album to be released about two years after the last one came out. “

– Chuck Comeau –

Now if our calculations are correct, if Simple Plan want to release the record 2 years after the last one came out (February 2016), that would make their goals aim for the next year, 2018.

In theory, that could be managable, but we know how good SP are with meeting deadlines and taking months to both write, record and also post-produce and promote new albums. I think we’ll all agree that we would like the next SP record to be released sooner rather than later, but let’s just take the year ‘2018’ as more of a fluid objective or a wishful thinking, than a fixed point in time. Especially if we already know the band plans to only focus on touring in 2017.

Simple Plan hope to get to the studio by the end of 2017

Daily Tribune published an interview with Jeff Stinco today, in which the lead guitarist of Simple Plan discussed the band’s current No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls 15th anniversary tour and its extraordinary success. And while SP are still working on how to bring this tour to as many countries as possible [in fact they just announced the second leg of the U.S. tour for this summer and a Canadian leg of the tour should be announced very soon], the time has slowly come for them to start thinking about their next record.

And according to Jeff – they already are:

“We’re talking about it. We’re hoping to get it to the studio at the end of the year. The problem is that with this band touring is pretty intensive and writing on the road is something we’re not very good at. At the end of the original ‘No Pads’ tour we had a second bus, a studio bus; The goal was to write songs and record them, but it ended up being the party bus. Nothing was recorded and it cost a lot of money to party. We learned a lot from that experience.”

– Jeff Stinco –

As you can see, even though Jeff is hinting on the fact that the band may start working on something record-related by the end of the year, he is also being fairly realistic: Simple Plan still have a lot more places to go this year with the No Pads tour and it would be extremely surprising to us all if Pierre and Chuck found any time to write songs in this crazy schedule. And typically, the song-writing duo spends over a year song-writing before the whole band actually hits the studio. So end of 2017 doesn’t really seem to be that realistic.

At the same time, however, we know that Pierre and Chuck can write amazing songs when they’re put under the pressure of time: we’ve seen that recently with their final quick pop-punk sessions in November 2015, out of which came songs like ‘I Refuse’, ‘Nostalgic’ or ‘Farewell’ and we’ve also seen it happen after the original tour for NPNHJB, when SP had just a short time to record their second record in order not to lose their momentum, which they got thanks to the success of their first record. And I dare say they may be in such momentum right now – once again thanks to No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls – except 15 years later.
